Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesives

Two-Part & One-Part Structural Adhesives

3M™ Scotch-Weld™ structural adhesives are the industry standard for high-strength bonding of metals, composites, and plastics in aerospace assembly and repair. Epoxy, urethane, and acrylic chemistries cover every combination of substrate, temperature requirement, and work-life need — from rapid field repair to primary bond joints qualified to BMS specifications.

Key Points

Key Point 01
Replace Fasteners & Welds
Even stress distribution over the entire bond area eliminates fatigue cracks at rivet holes and weld toes. Reduces part count, structural weight, and corrosion initiation sites.
Key Point 02
Cryogenic to High-Temperature
EC-2216 is rated to −423°F (−252°C) — the only Scotch-Weld product qualified for cryogenic bonding. Heat-cured film and paste grades extend service to +350°F covering the full aerospace thermal envelope.
Key Point 03
FST-Compliant Interior Grades
EC-7246-2 FST and EC-9356 FST are qualified to FAR 25.853 fire/smoke/toxicity requirements for use in aerospace interior structural assemblies where cabin compliance is mandatory.
Key Point 04
Flexible or Rigid Bond Lines
Urethane formulations (EC-3587, DP6310NS) absorb vibration and accommodate thermal expansion between dissimilar materials. Rigid epoxy grades maximize shear strength for static structural joints.
Key Point 05
EPX™ Applicator System
3M's EPX duo-pak cartridge system simultaneously meters and mixes two-part adhesives at the point of application — consistent mix ratio, minimal waste, available in handheld and automated formats.
Key Point 06
Liquid Shim Capability
EC-7272 Advanced Liquid Shim fills gaps between mating aircraft structural parts, eliminating the need for machined metal shims. Reduces assembly time and rework on close-tolerance structural interfaces.

Scotch-Weld™ AF Series

Structural Adhesive Films

3M™ Structural Adhesive Films deliver the controlled bondline thickness, uniform adhesive distribution, and process repeatability that primary structural assemblies demand. Used extensively in commercial and military aircraft for honeycomb panel closeout, composite skin bonding, and co-cure applications — where paste adhesives cannot provide the consistency that safety-critical joints require.

Key Points

Key Point 01
Precise, Repeatable Bondline
Film format delivers consistent adhesive thickness across the full bonded area — critical for load distribution in honeycomb sandwich structures and primary composite assemblies.
Key Point 02
Co-Cure Capable
Selected grades co-cure with prepreg at 250°F or 350°F in a single autoclave cycle, eliminating the secondary bonding step and reducing overall manufacturing time and cost.
Key Point 03

3M™ Adhesion Promoters & Primers

Bond Primers & Adhesion Promoters for Structural Joints

Adhesion promoters and corrosion-inhibiting primers are the first — and often most critical — step in any structural bond joint. 3M™ AP86A and the EW-5000 series are called out by Boeing BMS, Airbus AIMS, and military specifications as the required surface treatment before applying structural adhesives and film adhesives to aluminum, titanium, and composite structures. They significantly increase long-term bond durability and environmental resistance.

Key Points

Key Point 01
Maximizes Long-Term Bond Durability
Primers chemically couple the substrate surface to the adhesive, dramatically improving bond strength retention after humid aging, thermal cycling, and fluid exposure compared to untreated surfaces.
Key Point 02
Corrosion Inhibiting
EW-5000 series provides a sacrificial barrier layer on aluminum and titanium — protecting the metal substrate at the bond interface and extending structural joint service life in aggressive service environments.
Key Point 03
Specification-Called-Out Products
AP86A and EW-5000 are specifically named in Boeing BMS, Airbus AIMS, and military procurement documents. Using the spec-called product ensures qualification compliance and audit traceability.
AP86A
Widely specified adhesion promoter for metals and composites. Solvent-based thin film. Significantly improves peel and shear strength and long-term environmental durability of structural adhesive joints.
Adhesion Promoter
EW-5000 Series
Corrosion-inhibiting structural bond primer for aluminum and titanium substrates. BMS-qualified. Used before EC-2216, EC-1751, and AF film adhesives on primary structural joints.

Corrosion-Inhibiting Primer
EC-1945
Adhesion promoter for difficult-to-bond substrates including select engineering plastics and composites where standard surface preparation alone is insufficient to achieve structural-grade bond performance.
Specialty Promoter
When to Specify a Primer
  • Any safety-critical structural joint where long service life is required
  • Joints exposed to humidity, aviation fluids, or repeated thermal cycling
  • Anodized, chromated, or conversion-coated aluminum surfaces
  • Titanium and high-strength steel primary structural bonds
  • Composite surfaces after peel-ply removal or mechanical abrasion prep
  • When the adhesive TDS or applicable BMS/AIMS specification requires it
  • MRO repair joints that must meet the same standard as original production bonds
Application Process
  1. 1Surface preparation: Degrease, abrade, and re-degrease per the adhesive TDS. Primed surfaces must be clean and dry — contamination cannot be remedied by primer alone.
  2. 2Primer application: Apply in a thin, uniform coat by brush, spray, or lint-free wipe as specified. Avoid pooling, runs, or heavy buildup — a thin film bonds; a thick film can actually reduce strength.
  3. 3Primer cure: Allow full cure per TDS — typically 30 min to 2 hrs at room temperature, or accelerated with mild heat (approx. 150°F). Do not start cure timer until solvent flash-off is complete.
  4. 4Adhesive application: Apply adhesive within the primed surface open-time window specified in the TDS. Exceeding open time requires re-priming — do not proceed on an expired surface.
Compatibility: Always verify primer–adhesive system compatibility in the adhesive TDS before use. Not all primers are suitable for all adhesive systems. Confirm your specific combination with Coast-Line or the relevant 3M TDS.
