Oil-Lubricated Rotary Vane
Busch R5 RA — Mobile Cart-Mounted Vacuum System
The Busch R5 RA is the industry standard for composite manufacturing vacuum — a single-stage, oil-lubricated, air-cooled, direct-driven rotary vane pump mounted on a wheeled cart for shop-floor mobility. Designed for continuous duty, the R5 RA can be operated at ultimate pressure without overheating, making it ideal for extended layup and infusion processes where vacuum must be held overnight or across shifts. Over 3 million R5 pumps are in operation globally — it is the most proven vacuum pump on the market.

The cart configuration includes a liquid-filled vacuum gauge, inline cassette filter, manual release valve, and hose barb connector — ready to connect directly to vacuum bagging circuits. The integrated oil mist elimination system provides 99.9% oil-free exhaust, keeping the composite shop clean. An integrated float valve regulates oil return depending on oil level, ensuring consistent performance. High-performance carbon fiber vanes are standard — robust, long-service-life vanes that resist wear even under demanding continuous operation.

Available in pumping speeds from 18 CFM (R5 RA 0025) to 180+ CFM (R5 RA 0255) for mobile applications — matched to the bag surface area and required evacuation time. Variable speed drive (VSD) available on larger models for energy savings of up to 50% and better vacuum level control during the infusion window.

Dry-Running Rotary Vane
Busch SECO SV — Mobile Dry-Running Vacuum System
The Busch SECO SV is a compact, oil-free, dry-running rotary vane vacuum pump — the clean-process alternative to oil-lubricated systems. Self-lubricating Aerodur 274 Zirkon graphite vanes generate their own lubrication through graphite dust, eliminating oil entirely.

No oil changes, no oil mist, no risk of oil contamination to composite surfaces. Sealed-for-life bearings and minimal maintenance requirements make the SECO the low-total-cost option for shops where oil management is a concern.

Cart-mounted for shop-floor mobility with the same liquid-filled vacuum gauge, filter, and hose barb standard equipment as the R5 systems. The SECO's compact direct-drive construction allows installation in confined spaces and is ideal for smaller composite operations, educational facilities, prototyping labs, and shops processing low-temperature cure or ambient cure dry fabrics where deep vacuum is less critical.

Pumping speeds from 2 CFM (SECO SV 1005) to 28+ CFM (SECO SV 1040) — well-matched to small-to-medium vacuum bags. Ultimate pressure is approximately 90–112 Torr (approximately 26–27" Hg) — sufficient for most dry fabric wet layup and infusion processes but not as deep as the R5 for pre-preg or precision consolidation applications.

Busch R5 RA — Stationary Base-Mounted Vacuum System
For composite manufacturing facilities with permanent layup stations, large autoclave loading bays, or high-volume infusion operations requiring continuous centralized vacuum, Busch R5 RA pumps are configured as stationary base-mounted systems. Larger models from the R5 RA 0400 (330 CFM) through R5 RA 0630 (490 CFM) and above are direct-mounted on industrial base frames with flexible couplings, common vacuum manifolding, and centralized distribution to multiple lay-up stations via hardpipe or vacuum hose drops.

A central vacuum system consolidates multiple processes or workstations onto a single vacuum supply, reducing the total number of pumps needed while improving energy efficiency and uptime. Busch's systems can be configured as duplex (two-pump alternating) systems with automatic lead/lag switchover to ensure continuous vacuum even during maintenance intervals. The ECOTORQUE variable speed drive option provides up to 50% additional energy savings by matching pump output to actual demand — critical in facilities where vacuum load varies across shifts or production programs.

Water-cooled versions available for enclosed or high-ambient-temperature installations. Busch Master Control integrates multiple pumps into a single monitored system. Full factory systems-building support available from Busch's US systems engineering center.

Vacuum System · COMBI
Busch COMBI — Vacuum Booster + Backing Pump System
The Busch COMBI system combines a PANDA rotary lobe vacuum booster with an R5 oil-lubricated rotary vane backing pump in a single compact unit — the highest-performance vacuum solution for demanding composite processes. The booster dramatically increases the pumping speed at low pressures where a single-stage pump would struggle to maintain evacuation rates. COMBI systems are the ideal choice for large autoclave support, oversized vacuum bag assemblies, and infusion of very thick or complex composite structures where maintaining deep vacuum and high evacuation speed simultaneously is critical. Available as COMBI BRV (R5 rotary vane backing pump) or COMBI BNV (COBRA dry screw backing pump). Pumping speed at 1 mbar ranges from 276 ACFM minimum to 2,259 ACFM maximum — delivering near-high-vacuum performance at throughput rates otherwise requiring much larger single-stage systems. Ultimate pressure ≤0.0075 Torr. Compact skid-mounted units suitable for permanent installation adjacent to autoclave or large layup tables. Busch systems-building engineering available for custom configuration.

Technology & Selection Guide

How Rotary Vane Vacuum Technology Works

Rotor Spins

Eccentric rotor with multiple vanes mounted inside a cylindrical housing. Centrifugal force extends vanes outward.

Chambers Form

Vanes slide against housing wall, forming sealed chambers that trap a specific volume of air from the inlet.

Volume Shrinks

Chamber volume decreases as rotor continues rotating, compressing trapped air. Inlet side is continuously drawing in new air from the vacuum bag.

Air Expelled

Compressed air is expelled through outlet and exhaust filter. Continuous process creates steady vacuum at inlet — your vacuum bag connection.
