Core Material

Honeycomb and foam core for composite sandwich construction — the lightweight, high-stiffness backbone of aerospace, marine, and industrial composite panels. Coast-Line sources fiberglass, aluminum, aramid fiber, and polyurethane foam cores on a project-by-project basis.

Coast-Line sources core materials for composite sandwich structures — including fiberglass honeycomb, aluminum honeycomb, aramid fiber honeycomb, and polyurethane foam — to support customer programs in aerospace, marine, transportation, and industrial composite manufacturing. We source core requirements on a project-by-project basis to match the cell size, density, configuration, and certification level your application requires.

Project-Based Core Sourcing

Our primary composite materials focus is woven reinforcements, prepregs, adhesives, and consumables — but customers regularly need core to complete a sandwich structure. When you need a specific core for a program, send us your specification and we’ll quote it. Tell us the core type, cell size, density, dimensions, and any spec or certification requirement; we’ll handle the rest.

Why Honeycomb Sandwich Construction?

Minimum Weight

A sandwich panel with honeycomb core achieves the strength and stiffness of solid metal at a fraction of the weight — critical for every aircraft component.

37× Stiffer

A sandwich panel with a thin core is up to 37× stiffer in bending than a solid plate of the same weight. The core separates the face sheets and acts as a structural I-beam web.

Aerodynamic Surfaces

Honeycomb sandwich panels provide the smooth, rigid aerodynamic surfaces required for control surfaces, fairings, floors, and interior panels.

Multifunctional

Beyond structure: honeycomb provides sound attenuation (Acousti-Core®), radar transparency (radomes), energy absorption, and thermal insulation in a single component.

Fiberglass
Fiberglass Honeycomb
E-glass / phenolic · dielectric core
Excellent dielectric properties for radomes and RF-transparent structures
Non-metallic — no galvanic concerns when bonded to carbon skins
Good fire performance with phenolic resin systems
Available in standard hexagonal and over-expanded cell configurations

Aluminum
Aluminum Honeycomb
5052 / 5056 alloy · expanded
Highest compressive and shear strength per density — primary structural applications
5052 general purpose; 5056 alloy for higher-strength requirements
Corrosion-resistant coatings available for aerospace environments
Excellent thermal and electrical conductivity
Aramid Fiber
Aramid Fiber Honeycomb
Aramid paper · phenolic dipped
Non-metallic — no corrosion, no galvanic issues with carbon skins
Fire resistant — does not melt, self-extinguishing
Industry standard for commercial aircraft interior panels
Heat-formable to complex compound curves

Polyurethane
Polyurethane Foam Core
Closed-cell · sheet form
Closed-cell construction — moisture resistant, non-wicking
Easy to cut, machine, and shape with standard fabrication tools
Available in multiple density grades for different load applications
Best for cushioning, impact-tolerant, and non-structural sandwich panels

Honeycomb Cell Configurations Available

Regular Hexagonal

Standard cell shape for maximum strength efficiency. Equal mechanical properties in both ribbon and transverse directions. The most widely specified configuration for flat structural panels.

Over-Expanded

Hexagonal cells over-expanded to a rectangular shape. Allows the core to curve easily in one direction — well suited for cylindrical and singly-curved sandwich panels.

Flexible Core

Specialized cell geometry that conforms to tight radii and compound curves without machining or splice joints. Available in both aluminum and non-metallic core materials.

Why Source Core Through Coast-Line?

AS9120 Quality System

Every order flows through our AS9120-certified quality system with full mill traceability. Certificates of Conformance and Certificates of Analysis available on request to support your program documentation.

Spec-Driven Sourcing

We source against your governing specification — whether AMS, MIL, or an OEM document — so the core you receive matches what your program qualifies. Send the spec; we'll match it.

Custom Cut to Size

Core can be supplied in standard panels or cut to your specific length, width, and thickness. Engineered core machined-to-shape options available depending on the core type and program.

Single Source of Supply

Already buying prepregs, fabrics, adhesives, and consumables from Coast-Line? Add core to the same purchase order. One vendor, one quality system, one point of contact for your composite program.

Need adhesive to go with your honeycomb? We supply 3M™ adhesives to serve your needs.
